Cancer of the uterus is most commonly characterized by cancer cells present in the endometrius, the inner lining of the uterus (Endometrial Cancer). A less common form of uterine cancer (uterine sarcoma) is evidenced by cancer cells in the muscular wall of the uterus. Uterine cancer should not to be confused with cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, or other cancers of the female reproductive system.

  • In the United States, endometrial cancer is the most common cancer of the female reproductive organs.
  • According to the American Cancer Society, uterine cancer is the fourth most common cancer in U.S. women. It is the fifth most common cancer among women worldwide.
  • It is projected that approximately 40,320 cases of uterine (non-cervical) cancer will be reported in 2004, and 7,000 women will die.
  • Survival rates are best when the disease is discovered and treated in its earliest stage. Diagnosed early, the five-year survival rate is 96 percent according to the American Cancer Society.
